How To Establish First Time Credit
|

Having a good credit history is an essential part of life. Increasingly, how your credit score stacks up determines much more than just whether you qualify for a credit card or loan, or the rates you pay. Nowadays, your credit scor 00004000 e is used to determine your auto insurance premium and can be deciding factor in whether or not you get a job.
No one starts life with any sort of credit history, and paradoxically, in order to establish credit, you need to have credit. So how does one go about establishing first time credit?
Well, the easiest way to do it is to get a secured credit card. Secured cards are good for establishing credit because they don't require you to have any sort of credit history to get. The only requirement for getting one is to deposit the required funds into a savings account and pay the required fees.
Start out with a small credit line, no greater than $500 (this is the amount you will need to deposit) and make small purchases every month. Pay off your credit card in full every month.
How To Establish First Time Credit
Establishing good credit habits is key to getting and maintaining a good credit history, and paying your balance in full every month is one of the best habits to take up.
If you've paid off your balance every month and on time, then in about a year, your starting credit will be established. At that point, you should be able to apply for and get an unsecured credit card.
By this time, you should be receiving credit card offers in the mail. Resist temptation and only sign up for a maximum of two or three credit cards. Make sure as well, that the credit card terms are acceptable.
How To Establish First Time Credit
Handle your unsecured cards the same way you handled your secured card and over the years, as you continue to accrue a good payment history, your credit score will reflect this.

How many college credits are considered full time for parents health benefits purposes?
My son is on my health beneifts. Full time student status is a requirement. How many units is that? I have been told 7, 12, and 16. Which is it please? Thank you.
Do you have to be a full-time student to get a pell grant?
I’ve looked at several websites, but none say anything about minimum credit requirements to receive a pell.
Do I really need a full-time job to get a student loan?
I want to apply for a private student loan (I qualify for Unsubsidized Stafford loans ONLY) in August for the fall semester. I thought I would qualify for a private loan based on the fact that I will have 4+ years of employment, 2 years of positive credit history (thanks to an auto loan with no cosigner and all timely payments), and a year at my current residence.
However, I was reading the Chase website (in the FAQ about Chase private student loans) about requirements for getting a loan, and they say that in order to qualify I need to have had a FULL-TIME job for the PAST TWO YEARS, and to CONTINUE working this full-time job DURING school.
What? The whole point in getting a loan is so that I can focus on school! (and I plan on doing 18-20 credit hours). I haven’t had full-time employment, and there’s no way I can be full-time employed and doing this much classwork. I can do part-time but not full-time!
is a full-time job really a requirement? Or is this exclusive to Chase?
Edit:
Yes, I understand the risks associated with student loan debt. No, there is no possibility of a cosigner.
ah, more details. I have filed for FAFSA. I have $1750 stafford loan through Direct Loans, and $1750 loan through LaSalle Bank. I qualify for no other private loans.
oops, I meant I qualify for no other GOVERNMENT loans.
Unemployment Insurance part/ full time student?
My father was recently laid off. While trying to get unemployment, he figures he might as well finish his Master’s by taking the last few classes. Is this okay? I can’t find specific information regarding eligibility and being a student, such as credit requirements etc. Help?????
To get the accurate answer to your concern, contact the college your son attends or is going to attend and ask them what is considered full time status. I cant answer that because every state and college differs.
If he was laid off then he might qualify for the Dislocated Worker program. Ask at the career center (unemployment office). Each state has different rules about what tuition they will or wont help pay for. As far as how it will affect his unemployment each state is different there also. Some states will stop your unemployment if you answer ‘yes’ to the did you receive any training question on the weekly call in.
No, you can be part time and still get some funding from the Pell grant. I won’t be as much as if you were full time though and depends on how many classes you’re taking.
If i take 9 credit hours which is 3 less than a full time student do i still recieve Florida Bright Futures?
I am planning on taking 3 classes so 9 credit hours this means i am not a full time student but does that mean i dont recieve Bright Futures. I thought 9 credit hours was the requirement
Probably exclusive to chase. I went to college on student loans and I had never once in my life had a job back when I got it. So, I am sure you can get one without one. Maybe you will need to get it through someone else. I got mine from Wells Fargo.
I have bright future and no if yuo register for 9 hours then they will not disburse their funds. you are required to complete a total of 24 hours. You could drop a class half way through the semester if things get to hectic but remember you’ll have to make it up in th spring with 15 credit hours and you loose that money.
