I want to buy a house so I am working on repairing my credit. Due to death of child’s father and job lay off my credit suffered to the point where my scores were in the 300s. Over the last 1 1/2 years I have brought them up to very low 500s. The mortage company said I should get two credit cards and rebuild a payment history so my scores will increase. How can I get these cards if no one will give me credit? Are there any credit / department stores that give credit to very poor credit score holders? I don’t want to pay horrible fees and such.
4 years ago yes, not now. The banks were told to give out as many cards as possible to customers without considering their finances.

Well, it is hard to get an unsecured credit card when you have poor credit. But a secured credit card would be a good investment. My fiance did an unsecured credit card about a year and 1/2 ago and then just 2 months ago he was approved for an unsecured line of credit.
To boost your credit score:
The first thing you will need to do is call the three major credit reporting agencies and request a free copy of your credit report.

Then once you get those in the mail (7-10 days) there will be a dispute form attached to the reports. Fill those out for every negative account on your report regardless. Fax, mail go online whatever it takes to get those submitted as quickly as possible. Then those companies must answer your dispute within 30 days or it is removed from your credit report completely. So that will eliminate some things, hopefully.
Then make sure you pay all your revolving accounts to below 50% of your credit limits.
Make sure that you make all your payments no more than 20 days from the date it is due.
