Does opting out of prescreened credit card offers effect immediate store credit such as a Sears card?
I’m talking about the Sears credit card offers they make at the register. They denied me due to unfavorable credit history– which I don’t have, and recent credit applications– which I haven’t made. I checked my Equifax report and everything is normal– the only reason I can think of is the opt-out but I can’t confirm it.
Tell Sears to stop making inferior crap so people want to shop there. Seriously, you should start looking for another job because if they aren’t offering any incentives for people to sign up for a card, it is unrealistic to expect you to just solicit people to sign up for one.
No. I’ve been enrolled in the opt-out for about three years and have never ran into this problem. Since you know you have good credit, ask them for a copy of the credit report (you are entitled to by law after denial). Odds are some info was input wrong either on your report or on the Sear’s request for it. This way you see what they see… The opt-out program just limits you to only receive offers from companies that you already hold an account with; it has no effect on your credit score but it does limit the number of inquiries which helps your score in the long-haul. Keep in mind that Sears may have pulled your report from Transunion or Experian, without checking the Equifax report.
Stop applying for credit cards. You are only making your credit score worse.
Go to your bank and check into a secured credit card. You deposit $X as collateral for the line of credit. Use the card and pay it off in full every month. After 6 months to a year, you should be able to get a regular major credit card.
well…I know exactly what you’re talking about…my husband is a recent immigrant as well. The best way to go about it is by starting with secured credit cards (that’s when you put a certain amount of money–go for $1K since you have savings, you can afford it…into a special savings account with the bank you’re requesting the credit line from…they’ll issue a card based on that money staying there as security…
use that card (better yet, get 2, they’re small) for about a year or so, paying off regularly and ontime, then reuse…that will establish your credit. Most banks will have this type of credit card available. In the meantime…you can probably also get a car loan, they’re more flexible about tradelines since there’s some collateral. Likewise, furniture stores are generous with their approvals.
After a year (maybe sooner) the banks will allow you to change that credit card account from a secured card to a regular account if you’ve paid on time.
Also, I think the first credit card I got was from Nordstroms…they used to be more accepting of thin …of course that was a while ago, but they pride themselves in putting the customer first, so you may have more luck with them.
There could be many reasons why the Kmart application was rejected. However, it is not a good idea to apply for too many new lines of credit at the same time. Each hard credit inquiry dings your score but multiple applications will take a big bite.
If these are your first credit cards/applications, you need to wait to see if the Sears card is approved. When you get the card, use it for small purchases and pay in full every month. You need to use the card for at least 6 months before it will even be counted in your score. At that point, you might apply for another credit card, but waiting longer and building more credit history might be better.

I am a salaried employee, but all my credit card application are denied for insufficient credit history. Help!
I am not a US citizen; I am a civil engineer from abroad; I have a green card since end of 2005; Accepted my first position in the US last january 2006 with 45K salary. Presently I am in a 60K position. I have a bank account in the US since 2003 and 2 saving accounts since 2006 (totalling more than 15K). My real question is: how can I have a sufficient credit history if all my credit card applications (even from SEARS) are denied for that lack of sufficient credit history?
i signed up online for a sears rewards card and i then went to kmart to open up a “kmart” credit card..?
