What are some good secure or unsecured cards to go with if you have recovering credit?
I’ve heard nothing but NIGHTMARES involving First Premier Bank. They give you a 250-350 limit and charge you $170 in sign-up fees. They also charge you $7 bucks per payment for online or phone payments. Additionally, they apparently lock your account for up to 16 days as a ”security procedure” to verify payments if you pay way more than the minimum payment. I just want a regular ol’ credit card secured or not. I’ve been extremely great with my finances over the past year and have all three collections on my report paid off. Anybody tried or heard of a company they would suggest?

Do all secure credit cards eventually return initial deposit?
Hi. I made a secure credit card by depositing $500 2 years ago. I heard that when it “graduates”, it will become a true credit card and that they will return my deposit. Is this really how it works? Do I ever get my deposit back?

  4. MadMan says:

LOL! Of course you do. You can either ask for the money back or let them will keep it as a credit on you account so that as you charge stuff, it will be offset by the initial deposit.

better yet, go to a credit union and get a secured card from there. Freeze it in water ( it will NOT damage the card) and then only pay off the monthly. Helps tremendously.

I pay my 500.00 dollar credit card usually 100.00 aka pay way more than the Minimal payment. You can also combine your credit cards together. I have only 1 credit card and my score is over 600

I have not been able to find any banks that offer secure credit cards. Does anyone have any suggestions, or any personal experiences?
I travel a lot between CA and USA and having an american credit cards will be a lot more easier than carrying cash all the time…
    P.S: I don’t have a good credit score either :(

My advice would be to avoid any credit card offer that says in the fine print, “$99 activation, $49 participation fee, $75 annual fee,” etc. etc.

The only one I would trust is Orchard Bank. They offer both secured & unsecured cards. They are a part of HSBC. You can go direct to their website and apply…..orchardbank.com. They will tell you instantly which card you’ll most likely be approved for. I have nothing to bad to say about them, and they don’t lock your card.

Also….Citibank has a Secured card. You have to meet certain qualifications. They don’t offer this card online, on in the branches.

If you don’t have an American address you can’t get an American credit card because of the patriot act. Credit card companies need to be able to verify name, address, date of birth and social security number/tax id.

I second the pre-paid cards. Or Traveler’s Checks.
